Spooning – Complete Guide
Spooning is side-by-side sex. It is lower intensity than doggy or cowgirl for many people, which makes it useful for longer sessions, late-night sex, and when you want full-body contact without a lot of athletic effort. The angle is different and can hit spots that face-to-face or rear-entry miss.
Basic Setup
Both people on their side, facing the same direction. Penetrating partner behind. The receiving partner can keep both legs stacked or raise the top leg to open the angle and allow deeper entry. A pillow between the knees or under the top knee often makes it more comfortable and stable.
Small changes in hip tilt change the internal angle significantly. If it feels shallow or off, adjust the receiving partner’s top leg and the angle of both hips before thrusting harder.
Leg and Angle Variations
Legs stacked: Tighter, more friction, often shallower. Good for slower, closer sex.
Top leg raised: Opens the angle, usually allows deeper penetration, and gives the penetrating partner room to reach around for clit or penile stimulation.
Top leg held by the penetrating partner: More control over the angle and a stronger feeling of being held.
Both people more curled vs more stretched: Changes depth and how much of the front wall is contacted.
Intensity Levels
Low: Slow, shallow, full back-to-chest contact. Ideal for long sessions or when energy is low.
Medium: Steady rhythm, top leg raised, hand stimulation at the same time.
High: Stronger thrusting, deeper angle, more grip or verbal intensity. Spooning can handle this, but it is not its main strength — use it when you want that without switching positions entirely.
What Usually Feels Good
- Raising the top leg or having it held
- Slow, steady rhythm rather than hard pounding
- Hand on the clit or penis at the same time
- Full back-to-chest contact
- Small hip adjustments until the angle clicks
Body Differences & Troubleshooting
Height mismatch: Usually less of a problem than in standing or face-to-face positions. Pillows under hips or knees help fine-tune.
“Too shallow”: Raise the top leg more, curl slightly, or have the penetrating partner move higher relative to the hips.
“Uncomfortable for the bottom leg”: Pillow between knees or under the bottom hip.
“I want more intensity”: Raise the leg, increase rhythm, add hand stimulation, or transition into doggy without fully breaking contact.
