Missionary Position – Complete Guide
Missionary is called basic only when people do the most generic version and never adjust anything. Face-to-face, easy communication, full body contact, and a wide range of angles once you change leg position and hip tilt. Done with intention it is one of the most versatile positions available.
Basic Setup
Receiving partner on their back. Penetrating partner between the legs. That is the starting point, not the finished form. Small changes in leg height, hip tilt, and where weight is placed completely change how it feels.
A pillow under the receiving partner’s hips is the single highest-value upgrade for most people. It changes the angle of the pelvis and often turns shallow or awkward penetration into something that actually hits.
Leg Positions That Matter
Legs down or wrapped around: Closer contact, more friction, more full-body sensation. Good for slower, more intimate sex and eye contact.
Knees toward chest: Deeper penetration and a stronger angle toward the front wall. One of the biggest upgrades from “default” missionary.
Legs on shoulders: Maximum depth for many bodies. Can be intense — start controlled and check in.
One leg up, one down: Asymmetric angle. Useful when one side feels better or when full legs-up is too much.
Legs wide: More access, different stretch, easier for the penetrating partner to get close.
Intensity Levels
Low: Slow strokes, legs down or wrapped, focus on contact and kissing. Good warm-up or extended session pace.
Medium: Stronger rhythm, knees up or pillow under hips, occasional deep holds. Default good zone.
High: Legs high, harder thrusting, holding legs or pinning wrists, short deep bursts. Only when both people want that level and the body is ready.
What Usually Feels Good
- Pillow under the hips for angle
- Mix of long deep strokes and shorter ones
- Clitoral stimulation with a hand or toy during penetration
- Chest-to-chest contact and eye contact when both want it
- Holding a deep position for a few seconds instead of constant motion
Body Differences & Adjustments
Height or torso length mismatch: Pillow under hips, or the penetrating partner supporting themselves more on their arms so alignment works.
Stomach in the way: Legs higher or wider, or a slight side angle instead of perfectly square.
Wrist or shoulder fatigue for the penetrating partner: Shift weight to forearms, or use a position where more weight rests on the knees and hips.
Receiving partner needs more clit contact: Hand between bodies, small vibrator, or a slight angle change so the base of the penis or pubic bone provides more friction.
Troubleshooting
“It feels basic / boring”: Change leg position and add a pillow. Most “boring missionary” is just unadjusted missionary.
“Too shallow”: Hips up (pillow), knees toward chest, or penetrating partner closer and higher.
“Too deep / hits cervix”: Reduce leg height, shorten the stroke, or put less elevation under the hips.
“I can’t get the angle right”: Stop and deliberately try knees up vs pillow vs one leg up. Small geometry changes matter more than thrusting harder.
